I think one of the most commonly asked questions bank customers normally have to answer each time they want to go to their bank is "What is my account number?".

Without knowing your account number, it would be hard to actually deposit or withdraw money from the bank or even do business with the bank.

It's not everyone that has the ability to remember all the digits in their account number. In our digital world of today, we have to deal with a lot of numbers from your phone number, address number, bank account number, ATM card PIN, Matric number and so on. We deal with a lot of numbers nowadays and bank accounts like most other personal accounts also come with numbers.

Personally, I don't even know my savings account number other than the fact that I've saved it on my mobile phone and also done an online mobile backup with my GSM service provider. So, every time I go to my bank to pay in money or withdraw, I just pull out my phone first just to check my account number.

Have you ever experienced days when you went to the bank and forgot your account number and just did not know what to do?

For someone like me, it has happened that I forgot to carry my phone and so didn't know where to get my account number from. Having an account number at hand is important before doing any business with your bank. It is what builds a friendship with you and the bank and it's on top of that friendship that you can do more things together.

If you happen to forget your account number and find yourself at the bank, one thing you can do is to visit the customer service desk and just give them to help you with your account number that you want to pay in some money. They are more likely to oblige and may ask you some other personal questions just to verify you are the owner. You may also use the direct phone line in your bank's office and call their online customer care. They may need you to provide some personal details like date of birth, address, phone number and last transaction. The other alternative would be to head back home and get your account number from the last receipt or teller used.

A lot of people at times do forget their bank account number since they normally write it down rather than carry it in their memory. I would wish that Nigerian banks would at least offer a service that allows customers to at least check for their account number either on their mobile phone or ATM card.

So, if you forgot your account number for your bank, you can do any of the following things:

- Call customer care on your mobile
- Visit customer care physically
- Use internet banking
- Check your last sms alert

You can call your bank on phone or physically visit them to ask about your account number.
